CRP 371 - INTRODUCTION TO URBAN DESIGN

COURSE CONTENT
The course includes a number of subsequent lectures that will introduce urban design concepts, concerns and techniques. Lectures will be accompanied with the design and sketch problems through which students are expected to use their knowledge gained via the lectures. While the first part of the course focuses on the theoretical backgrounds, the second part aims to discuss practical design problems on a selected case study. Some classes are dedicated to discussions on the case area so where the drafts of students’ projects are given comments in the class. The projects will be announced and the necessary information will be circulated through hardcopy handouts and maps in the class, and digital materials via Moodle.
AIM
The course introduces the nature, concepts and concerns of urban design and to familiarize students with the form and functions of spatial and physical components of the built environment via design exercises through the study of selected cases.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Acquiring theoretical knowledge on the basic topics of urban design literature,
- Understanding the role of urban design in urban planning process,
- Improving skills on illustrating different sketches and plans,
- Understanding the dynamics of an urban design project that requires an interdisciplinary approach.
REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION POLICY
Students of the course will be evaluated with reference to the following tasks:
- Participation (10%)
- Sketch Problems (20%)
- Term-Paper – 2000 words (30%)
- Final Submission (40%)
Active Moodle usage is expected throughout the course! Each submission has to be uploaded to Moodle web page of the course. All announcements related to the course will be done through the Moodle system.
